| While I don't pretend
to be a major lure coursing aficionado, I have enjoyed watching some
of my dogs run successfully in this competition since my start with
Deerhounds. I was a charter member of the Colorado Lure Coursing Association
back in the early '70s when I lived in that state and lure coursing
was in its infancy.
My first Deerhound is pictured here in 1975 placing
in an ASFA trial mixed breed stake of seventeen, in which he was
the only Deerhound competing. When mixed breed stakes were no longer
offered there was not enough Deerhound competition to make up the
points needed, so "Walker" never finished his field championship,
though he enjoyed running and did well at all the trials in which
he participated.
For a time in the early
'80s there was good competition in Deerhounds at ASFA trials in
Michigan, and I finished both Ch.Leh igh
Hollister, F.Ch. and Ch. Lehigh Jillian, F.Ch. at these events. One
a day in 1984 Jilly did something quite unusual: there was an ASFA
trial being held on the same grounds as a show. She took the Breed
at the show, went over to the trial and took the Breed there, went
back to the show and placed 3rd in the Hound Group, then returned
to the trial where she went Best in Field!
Most recently I have
run my dogs in AKC trials. Several of my dogs have qualified for
their JC titles, but since there are no longer AKC tests in Michigan,
it now requires a much longer drive to attend these events. Since
my "Deena" went Best in Field at the AKC national specialty
trial in 1996, I was inspired to pursue her AKC field championship.
I brought her
and "Gordy" to a few trials in Ohio, where Gordy (pictured)
acquired his SC (see more about Gordy as a coursing dog on his page),
and Deena did complete her field championship with a very memorable
all-breed Best in Field in an entry of 65 competing dogs! She is
pictured after being awarded that win.

We look forward to continued participation
in lure coursing events. It's great fun for the dogs and thrilling
to watch!
