Lehigh "B" Litter Has Arrived!

Ch. Lehigh Yanna has given birth to five strong puppies, three dogs and two bitches. She produced these puppies without complication on the night of Sept. 23. The puppies weighed between 17 and 21 ounces each, which is heavier birth weight

than we usually have. The sire of the puppies is Gayle Bonetcou's young Ch. Gayleward's Tiger Woods.

Yanna is owned by Cindy VanHeyningen, and is on maternity leave at Lehigh on a lease-back arrangement.

Yuill Wins in Ohio

Ch. Lehigh Yuill emerged victorious at two recent Ohio shows, adding to his impressive string of victories this summer.
At the Sugarbush KC show on Aug. 23, Yuill was Best of Breed over an entry of 14 under Australian judge Jamie Hubbard, defeating four other champions, including a Best in Show winner and another top-ten-ranked hound. Mr. Hubbard awarded Yuill a Group 4th later the same day.
The following day Yuill was again Best of Breed over the same entry at the Western Reserve KC show, this time under judge Dana Cline. This was a Scottish Deerhound Club of America Supported Entry show. Mr. Cline, who handled several winning Deerhounds during his career as a professional handler, put Yuill up to a Group 2nd that afternoon, bowing only to a lovely Afghan Hound who went on to win Best in Show. These Group placements bring Yuill's total to an even dozen, and this makes five placements in the last six shows. Yuill was handled at these shows by Paula, as usual.

Yola Best of Winners for Major

Lehigh Yola, owned by Cindy VanHeyningen, was chosen Winners Bitch and Best of Winners for a three-point major at the Scottish Deerhound Club of America Supported Entry held in conjunction with the Western Reserve KC show in Chagrin Falls, Ohio on Aug. 24. Judge Dana Cline termed Yola and her sister, Yare, who was his choice for Reserve Winners Bitch, "absolutely beautiful." Yola is just beginning her show career, having waited in the wings during the campaign of another sister, Ch. Lehigh Yanna. Yola took her first point in Michigan in July. She was handled to her wins by Grant. Yola is, of course, a sister to Yuill, sired by Ch. Fernhill's Torquil x Ch. Dunkeld Jihad Emma of Lehigh.

Yuill Wins Another Group, Places in Others

Ch. Lehigh Yuill is now a multiple Group winner. He was chosen best of the Hound Group at the Ann Arbor KC show in Monroe, Michigan on July 5, 2003, over an entry of 179 Hounds. The judge was Ms. Bonnie Linnell Clarke, under whom we had never shown previously, which made the win especially thrilling. Ms. Clarke has previously judged a Deerhound specialty show. We were certainly proud to compete in the Best in Show ring once again.
The next outing for Yuill was a weekend of three shows in Marshall, Michigan four weeks later. On August 1 judge Mrs. Helen Lee James placed Yuill Third in her Hound Group, this at the Berrien KC. At the Jaxon KC show on August 3, Yuill was presented with a Group Second under judge Tom Kilcullen. These were the first placements for any Lehigh dog under either of these judges. Mr. Kilcullen has owned several Deerhounds himself so we were quite pleased with his recognition, as well as that of Mrs. James.
Yuill was handled by Paula to these wins, as usual.

Zephyr Takes Five Points From Puppy Class

Lehigh Zephyr competed in his first two shows in late May, at age 11 months. His first time in the ring was at the Holland Michigan KC show on May 23, 2003 where he went Winners Dog and Best of Winners for two points under judge Joe Gregory, who judged the SDCA National Specialty in 1992. On May 25 Zephyr was again Winners Dog and Best of Winners, this time for a three-point major, under judge Helen Lee James at the Kalamazoo KC show. Zephyr's wins came over all-adult competition, including some noteworthy winners. Zephyr is owned by Jean Baldwin and is a son of Ch. Lehigh Yuill and Fernhill's Tacey of Lehigh.

Slade Finishes Championship

Utkinton Slade of Lehigh, a son of our Ch. Lehigh Urquhart out of Ch. Utkinton Osa, has finished his AKC championship. Owned by Roger and Linda Berkan, Slade was usually handled by Paula, though Grant guided him to two of his wins. Slade completed his championship in only eight shows, defeated for Winners Dog on only one occasion. His wins include two large Supported Entry majors (4 and 5 points respectively). Slade is pictured going Best of Breed to finish at the Pontiac KC show on September 7 under judge Gareth Morgan-Jones, handled by Grant. Slade went on to make the cut in the Hound Group this day, handled in the Group by Paula. Slade was bred by Tom and Tanya Smythe.

Miles Attains Swiss Championship

Lehigh Yanker The Deerhunter, called "Miles" and owned by Renee Devaux and Kurt Rohrbach of Switzerland, has finished the requirements for his Swiss championship with a wonderful win. Miles went Best of Breed at the Exposition de Lotzwill in an entry of 25 Deerhounds. The judge was Czechoslovakian sighthound breeder Antonin Mudra (Sofena Borzoi).
The Swiss championship is not an easy title to obtain. The dog must win three CACs, two of them at international shows. At lease 12 months must elapse between the first CAC and the last. In addition, a sighthound must be a proven coursing or racing dog. Miles is an enthusiastic lure coursing dog in addition to a very successful show dog in Europe.
We at Lehigh are extremely proud of this wonderful dog, and are grateful to his dedicated owners for guiding him to all his accomplishments.
Miles is a son of Ch. Fernhill's Torquil and our Ch. Dunkeld Jihad Emma of Lehigh.

Two More Majors for Zephyr

Young Lehigh Zephyr took back-to-back major wins at the Sugarbush and Western Reserve KC shows in Ohio on Aug. 23 and 24. Coming from the 12-18 Months Dogs class, 13-month-old Zephyr was chosen Winners Dog and Best of Winners under Jamie Hubbard from Australia the first day, and Winners Dog under sighthound authority Dana Cline at the Scottish Deerhound Club of America Supported Entry on the second day. Owned by Jean Baldwin, Zephyr now boasts 11 championship points, including three majors, in just five outings to date.

Yanna Finishes With Breed Over Top Special

Lehigh Yanna is now a champion. She was Winners Bitch for two points at the Michiana KC show in Valparaiso, Indiana on June 21 under judge Jane Forsyth, and the following day she repeated her Winners Bitch win and went on to Best of Winners and finally Best of Breed over a Top-Ten-ranked special, making it a three-point major, which completed the requirements for her title. The judge was Shelley Hennessy. Yanna is owned by Cindy VanHeyningen and Paula, and Grant showed Yanna to these wins. Yanna is the 2 1/2-year-old daughter of Ch. Fernhill's Torquil and Ch. Dunkeld Jihad Emma of Lehigh, and a sister to our Yuill.

Auric Best Puppy at National Specialty

Lehigh Auric made his show debut at 8 1/2 months of age at the Scottish Deerhound Club of America's National Specialty in Elizabethtown, Kentucky on May 9 and 10, 2003. He emerged First in the 6-9 Months Puppy Dogs class of 10, then the following day returned to the ring to compete for Best Puppy in Show, where he prevailed over the winners of the other three Puppy classes, defeating a total entry of 47 puppies! The judge was Miss Dorothy Macdonald, who stated in her critique, "He beat out a lovely collection of puppy class winners with the great lift and reach of his side movement."
Auric was handled by Paula, and is the son of Ch. Lehigh Urquhart, SC and Ch. Lehigh Verona.

Arley Best Male in Futurity

Lehigh Arlen carried on with the winning streak he started in Louisville this spring (three majors at seven months of age) by defeating all other males in the Futurity of the Scottish Deerhound Club of America in Elizabethtown, Kentucky on May 7, 2003 at age 8 1/2 months. Judge Dani Creech Edgerton chose him as her winner of the 6-9 Months Puppy Dogs class, then took him to Best Puppy over an entry of 33 puppies, and then on to Best of Opposite Sex in Futurity, defeating the entry of 11 Young Adult Dogs. Arley was shown by Grant.
Arley and his brother, Auric, stood behind their dam, Ch. Lehigh Verona, in the Brood Bitch class of the Futurity, winning the class of four dam-and-produce groups.
We were also delighted that Ch. Lehigh Yuill won the Stud Dog class in the Futurity in an entry of six sire-and-get groups. Showing behind Yuill in this class were his son, Lehigh Zircon (second in the 9-12 Months Puppy Dogs class), and his daughter, Lehigh Zilly (1st in the 9-12 Months Puppy Bitches class).
